This is a brief summary of the changes and new features of
MandelMountains V2.0 in reference to MandelMountains V1.1 (Fish Disk #295):
- Added the JULIA SET option
- Added the DOUBLE PRECISION mode for higher magnification factors and
for making use of an optional 68881/82 coprocessor (with 1.3 libraries)
- Replaced my own file requester by Justin V. McCormick's great PathMaster
- Extended the layout of the parameter display window (including display
of the magnification factor)
- Color Range now changeable with the F1/F2 keys
- Corrected a bug that caused a black 1-pixel border at the right edge of
an image
- Implemented the Depth and HZoom precalculation
- New Super-Nonlinear transformation mode
- Optimized rendering routines - now about 5-15% faster!
- Fixed the problem with the vertical sprite bar sometimes appearing in the
lower part of the screen on PAL Amigas (probably caused by a bug in
the graphics.library). Since FreeSprite() didn't work, I had to use
a more rude method: I now directly disable sprite DMA by resetting
the appropriate bit in DMACON. Sorry, but I couldn't find a better solution!
- When saving an image over an already existing file, the icon
will NOT be written again, thus preserving the position of the old one.
- Fixed several minor bugs.
Obviously the true fractal enthusiasts live in Germany and Switzerland,
from where I got some very positive reactions. Thanks to all who sent
me comments, suggestions and contributions and so encouraged me to
develop MandelMountains V2.0! I hope you'll like the new version.
A bit disappointing was the complete lack of reactions from the USA.
Because of this, I submit most of the sample images in PAL display format,
and I am seriously thinking about releasing the whole documentation
in German only next time, because there seem to be not many fractal
freaks in the rest of the world (positive exception: an American student
of mathematics at Cambridge/UK).
A note to owners of a 68020/881 or 68030/882 accelerator board: If you send
me an empty disk, you'll get the special turbo version of MandelMountains
which fully supports these processor configurations.
SAMPLE IMAGES:
Initial.NTSC - A total view of the Mandelbrot set. This image serves
as origin for all magnifications.
Julia1.PAL - A Julia set with a c value taken from the Seahorse Valley.
Compare its structure to the Seahorse Valley itself!
Julia2.PAL - A close-up of Julia1.PAL. Compare this to Example3.pic
of MandelMountains V1.1!
Mandel1.NTSC - This is a close-up of Example3.pic (V1.1).
Mandel2.PAL - A close-up of Mandel1.NTSC. The magnification factor of
more than 32000 requires double precision mode.
IMAGE SERVICE:
If you have produced some really good looking images, feel free to send
them to me for inclusion in the MandelMountains Image Bank. If you are
a registered MandelMountains user, you'll get your disk returned with a
selection of the best images I received up to that time.
I'm already planning MandelMountains V3.0 with advanced features like
animation, but since I am contemporarily working on lots of other projects
and also still go to school, there will never be a V3.0 without stronger
support.
THE FUTURE OF THIS PROGRAM DEPENDS ON YOU!
